John Heartfield’s early works (book covers, posters and other printed matter) were and still are a revelation for me. The definite monograph on his oeuvre is this one, edited by his brother Wieland Herzfelde and published in the former GDR in the 1960’s. A treat for the eyes in design as well as production. http://www.agoodbook.de

Jedermann sein eigner Fussball - February 1919 [edited by John Heartfield]. The head on the football in the upper left is Wieland Herzfelde. Most art historians credit the fan montage to George Grosz, although Grosz and Heartfield were working so closely together at that point that it’s difficult to say who did what. The headline says: Competition! Who is the prettiest? This is the magazine that got Herzfelde arrested and held without charges for thirteen days.
