"Attention! You are now leaving West Berlin."    Germans crossing the Berlin Wall, a symbol of oppression that separated West Berlin (Federal Republic of Germany) from the rest of East (Communist) Germany, until in 1989, when people power forced the East German government to allow people to freely pass through the wall. People took chunks off the wall, and so in 1990, the remainder of the wall (and of the communist government) was removed. Germany achieved re-unification on 3 October 1990.
