Bodhisattva Maitreya, 2nd-3rd century, Pakistan: Ancient Gandhara, schist.  Maitreya is a bodhisattva who is regarded as a future Buddha and successor to the historic Sakyamuni Buddha. Maitreya is typically depicted as seated, but Gandhara was widely known for production of standing Buddhist sculptures during this period.  Made in Gandhara, in what is now Pakistan and Afghanistan, this sculpture reflects the international style that was present in this ancient kingdom. Gandhara was located…

This Gandharan remnant from a much larger statue illustrates another aspect of the Miracle at Sravasti.  It is reputed that the Buddha rose into the air with water gushing from his feet, and at the same time, flames issued from his shoulders, as seen here.  To the left and right of Buddha's head are his protectors, the gods Indra and Brahma carrying parasols.  The height of this piece is about 52 cm.
