Man Ray Man Ray was an American modernist artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal.

Artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, (1836-1893) worked his night scenes in a realistic vein: "sharply focused, almost photographic," his paintings innovated in applying the tradition of rural moonlight images to the Victorian city, recording "the rain and mist, the puddles and smoky fog of late Victorian industrial England with great poetry."

John Singer Sargent, self portrait, 1906-His inordinate technical facility, coupled with his ability to portray elegant sitters in sumptuous surroundings, made him extremely popular w wealthy patrons on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite his success as one of the most sought–after portraitists of the late Victorian era, he eventually became exasperated by the whim& vanities of prominent sitters. By 1909 he abandoned conventional portraiture in order to "experiment w more imaginary fields."
