She was the second of the two ship North Carolina class; the US Navy's first battleships of the post-Dreadnought era, produced to 35000 ton Washington Treaty limits. Despite an eventful war including the sinking of Japanese battleship Kirishima in September 1942 she suffered no casualties at all throughout the conflict.
