Phlox stolonifera with Bloodroot, Vinca, Columbine and Hosta. I’ve found that this is a shallow rooted plant. Keeping it out of the hot afternoon sun keeps the soil from getting too dry. While it has tolerated some dryness I haven’t taken a chance to see just how dry it can get. During the summer I water the area a little if we haven’t had rain.
Thalictrum Black Stockings --- Meadow rues need a cold winter to bloom well, but this one seems more tolerant of the South. Columbine-like foliage, blooms in late July on tall black stems. May need staking. Likes a moist, rich soil, grows about 4ft. tall (5-6' in bloom) by 2ft. wide. Really lovely. z. 5-9
Geranium (cranesbill) ‘Rozanne’, although not new to 2012 (it was the 2008 Perennial Plant of the year), is is a billowing purple border plant that blooms from early summer right up until frost. Try adding Shasta Daisy, the traditional white, long blooming and easy-to-grow perennial, to the group.
