Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) occupies an iconic and pivotal position in music, early works firmly in the Classical style but launching into the Romantic Era. His 9 symphonies are all very different in style, and have had a strong influence on later composers, as has his piano sonatas and string quartets. He was one of the first independent composers, though he started to go deaf in his 20s.
