Swedish Traditions: The Swedish Midsummer Party with food, songs, dances and Midsummer-pole

MikQuattro -- Maypole at Midsummer - comment from another pinner -- Nobody in Sweden knows the real symbolism. It's a pre-Christian tradition though - the cross is just a thin veneer of Christianity - so is the Christian name for the day 'Saint John's Day. There is plenty of folklore surrounding the day - Traditionally minding people attend an official celebration on the day - other's party all night long, as it doesn't get dark..

Beltane (May the ribbons represent the flag -- this one is Swedish -- the 2 wreaths hang on the T shape pole -- w/vines & flowers wrapped around it all -- There's a ribbon winding around to music with Folk in National Costumes from their regions.

Maypole - we call it midsummer pole. The Swedes are all about celebrating the seasons. Midsummer is when the long and lovely summer days begin. Sun sets (if at all) around 10pm. On Midsummer - the city streets are empty as the Swedes celebrate with herring, schnapps and strawberry cake somewhere in the country side with friends and family.

How the North works I found this lying unfinished around on my computer, and because I’ve got no comic today you’ll have to do with this. Being the Dane I am, I of course forgot the Sami People (the Nordic "Indians"). EDIT: Yes, Sweden got Norway later on, but that is not what the bottom picture is about. For many years the Nordics were separated in West-North and East-North. When Sweden got Norway that messed up the separation of West and East and marked Denmark’s decline from power.

How the North works. In the footnote of the picture the artist wrote: "Being the Dane I am, I of course forgot the Sami People (the Nordic "Indians").

Swedish Midsummer Party

Midsummer may be the most typically Swedish tradition of all. It's June, Sweden is in full bloom and friends and family gather to celebrate, sing and dance.
