Haze was convinced he would only go off to World War II for around 4 months, but ended up fighting for 4 years. This hardened him inside. He went into the war intending to go back and be a preacher like his grandfather, but came out an atheist.

This summer, the Tower 2014 installation, conceived by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, will commemorate each and every British or Colonial fatality from World War 1 by planting 246 red ceramic poppies in a flowing sea around the tower.
