Portrait of Frank Benson (1858–1939), 1910 by Hugh Goldwin Riviere (British 1869–1956)....Sir Francis Robert Benson, was a British actor-manager, who founded his own company in 1883 and produced all but two of Shakespeare's plays.....why he is wearing shorts, i've no idea, I suppose the blazer with it's badge looks like sporting attrire....he looks very actorish, maybe its a costume for a part?
Pastel by Nancy Lee Moran. An interior scene can tell a story in a portrait. Here Jan has a photo of her father on the desk where she, a teacher, sits reading. The vase on the floor came with the historical home, a home Jan restored. A photograph Jan found in the house showed a woman in Period clothing, standing beside the vase in a time when the house and vase were both new. Jan included the vase in the art, for continuity with the history of the house and with all who have called it home.
