One of my favorite paintings: The School of Athens - Raffaello Sanzio

It was painted between 1510 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate with frescoes the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

The Classical Period came to an end when the Greeks divided into two rival leagues, Sparta and Athens. Sparta was a military state while Athens remained Democratic, these differences lead to the Peloponnesian War which crippled Greece.
