William H. Seward (May 16, 1801 – October 10, 1872) was the 12th Governor of New York, U.S. Senator and the Secretary of State under Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, and was a member of Lincoln's wartime cabinet. On the night of Lincoln's assassination, he survived an attempt on his own life. Under Johnson he engineered the purchase of Alaska which was ridiculed at the time as "Seward's Folly".
