Viralated – 12 Vintage Victorian Postmortem Photos

VIctorian post-mortem photography: most often the family would have the siblings of the deceased in the photo as well.

Tragic. A real photo postcard showing two sisters laid out in matching coffins. An inked inscription verso in a fine period hand identifies the girls as Claudia Severine Groth / Born Sept. 30, 1908 / Died Feb. 20, 1911 and Millie Cecelia / Born Dec. 25, 1910 / Died Feb. 21, 1911. Underneath this the inscription identifies their mother, Mrs E. O. Groth / Enderlin / N. Dak.

Myth of the Standing Postmortem Photo

Post mortem Victorian pic...I don't really like seeing these of children but, as a lot of these pictures state, sometimes they are the only pictures ever taken of the child. This is a piece of out history folks...as unsettling as it is.

Memento Mori: Postmortem Photographs. This is one of the Charles Van Schaick photographs that was used in the book "Wisconsin Death Trip." It's a portrait of deceased twin infants in coffins: Robert and Janet Fitzpatrick were born on July 5, 1885, and died April 20, 1886. This mourning ritual was widespread in19th-century America - I find it fascinating.
