Welton Dale, East Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Wolds
Pontefract Castle overlays the town ditch, originally part of royal Saxon town of Tanshelf. In late 1080s, Ilbert de Lacy founded an earthwork motte and bailey fortress on site. In the 12th & 13th century, the de Lacy family founded the stone castle, later became principal royal castle in North England. This Plantagenet castle stands high on a ridge, with a great ditch, barbican & 2 stone walled outer baileys but sad results of Civil War destroyed it. Near where deBeckwith family lived.
