In September 1943, Oberst Wessel Freytag von Loringhoven replaced Oberst Erwin Lahousen as head of Abwehr Abt. II. Loringhoven provided the detonator charge and explosives for the assassination attempt against Hitler on 20 July 1944. He was able to obtain unrecognized British explosives from Abwehr sources. He was suspected of complicity in the plot and committed suicide on 26 July, age 44, rather than risk implicating his family and colleagues.
