Type-2C / U-56: Built by Deutsche Werke, Kiel as yard number 255. She was laid down on 21 Sept and launched on 3 Sept. Commissioned on 26 Nov. under the command of Kapitänleutnant Wilhelm Zahn and initially assigned to the 5th U-boat Flotilla until 31 Dec. 1939 after which she was re-assigned to the 1st U-boat Flotilla for operations. She carried out twelve war patrols, sinking three ships for a total 8,860 (GRT) and one auxiliary warship of 16,923 GRT; she also damaged one vessel of 3,829…

Battleship Gneisenau was a German capital ship, built at Kiel and launched on 8 December 1936. Completed in May 1938, the ship was armed with a main battery of nine 28 cm (11 in) C/34 guns in three triple turrets.On the 26 February, the British launched an air attack; one bomb penetrated her armored deck and exploded in the ammunition magazine. In 1945, she was sunk as a blockship, to prevent access in the seaport of Gotenhafen (Gdynia) in German-occupied Poland.

She was launched on 30 July 1935 and commissioned on 21 August, with Korvettenkapitän Hans-Günther Looff in command. She conducted 19 patrols under a series of commanders, including U-boat ace Wolfgang Lüth, sinking eight ships totalling 17,221 gross register tons (GRT) and damaging another displacing 412 tons. There were 20 Type-2B submarines commissioned, (U7 - U24) & (U120 - U121).
