Ww2 • Heavily Armed Youths of the 12th SS Panzer (Hitler Jugend) Division ready themselves for battle. The division, which consisted mainly of teenage volunteers, was created in June of 1943 and had its baptism of fire in Normandy a year later. - "The young S.S. troops were detestable young beasts," a British officer recalled, "but, like good infantry, they stood up and fought it out when overrun." - In the fighting that raged around Caen, nearly 90 % were killed, wounded or captured

German soldiers entrenched - probably Eastern Front. Note the Mauser pistol on top of the trench. It has the wooden stock attachment, more commonly issued to artillery regiments.

Waffen SS machine gun elements prepare to fire. Heavily used by German forces, the machine gun played a central role in infantry tactics. Unlike the case of Allied armies, the German book made the machine gun the primary assault weapon of infantry advance down to platoon level.
