For centuries the Icelandic volcano ‘Hecla’ was considered a gateway to hell, the surrounding nature seemed to be its forecourt. Repeated eruptions of never-ending lava and ash rain brought great misery on the island and destroyed entire villages. Jules Verne dedicated the opening of his “Journey to the Center of the Earth” to this landscape.  Those who returned from the top of the volcano after looking into its crater slowly went crazy.  They say they stared directly into hell.
