Mari, Syria, had a population of 50,000 in the year 2400BC.  It served as an important trade nexus for stone & timber coming from north Syria to Mesopotamia to the south.  It also traded in dates, grains, olives, & pottery.  Residents wore elaborate clothing & hairstyles, and worshipped several gods.  Among these were Dagan, the storm god; Ishtar, the fertility goddess; and Shamash, the sun god.  The city flourished for a thousand years before it was sacked by the Babylonian king Hammurabi.
