In the first half of the first millennium BCE, Greek city-states began to look outside of Greece for land and resources, and so they founded colonies across the Mediterranean. Trade contacts were usually the first steps in the colonization process and then, later, once local populations were subdued or included within the colony, cities were established. A polis (plural: poleis) was the typical structure of a community in the ancient Greek world. A polis consisted of an urban centre, often fortified and with a sacred centre built on a natural acropolis which controlled a surrounding territory (chora) of land. The term 'polis' has been translated as a 'city-state' as there was normally only one city and because an individual polis was independent.
