ref. 347, fantastic Casa Masson patina dial. The watches that begin appearing in the 1940s include some that are very much sought after classics today. Elements of models like the ref. 347 can be seen in later watches like the Carrera. Occasionally, these watches are referred to as pre-Carreras, but to my mind they are too early for that epithet. Nonetheless, some similarities are clear. Casa Masson is a famous watch and jewelry store in South Brazil for 120 years.

Eska is one of the smallest watch brands. After the end of World War I many watch manufacturers appeared in Europe and Sylvan Kocher & Cie. was of them. The name Eska is the phonetic spelling in French of the letter s and k (es-ka). The wristwatches of the brand included manual and automatic models, besides models with full calendars and digital time displays.

caliber 30CH Fly-back ref. 5982 38mm. case. If you think Patek made the best chronographs in the 1940s and 50s you’re half right. Patek absolutely made some of the best and still most desirable chronos in the middle part of last century, but there was another manufacturer making truly top-notch stopwatch mechanisms for the wrist, and that was Longines. Yes, Longines. The 13ZN chronograph gave way to the 30CH chronograph with a similar design but slightly upgraded, though somewhat less…

1000 made in 1971. In 1969 three automatic chronographs were introduced: the Zenith el Primero, the Seiko 6139, and the Caliber 11 (produced in partnership with Heuer, Hamilton/Buren, Dubois-Depraz and Breitling). To this day, it is disputed as to which of these brands launched first. In fact the Caliber 11 did go on sale before the el Primero. The history of el Primero might have ended abruptly in 1975. That was when the Zenith Radio corporation, the American company that had owned the…

It all started in 1860, with Edouard Heuer setting up a workshop in Bernese, a predominantly French-speaking area of Switzerland close to the French border, a small town even now with a population under 5000. However, it is no stranger to watch companies, having also been where Breitling was founded and having been home to Longines. Of course those companies were artisan workshops producing small numbers of mostly silver-cased pocket watches. In 1914 Heuer made the first wristwatch for men…

From the mid-1940s until the late 1960s, the most beautiful timeless and iconic Chronographs were created. These watches still feel contemporary and fashionable today. The most notable changes to the Compax model occurred in the 1960’s, with the use of a water-resistant-type case with screw back cases, as opposed…

around 2500 made. Yes, Zenith still made classic hand-wound chronographs in 1969/70, although they launched the world’s first automatic chronograph el Primero that same year! The 146 were the last manual wind chronographs movements used prior to the introduction of the el Primero automatic, Zenith stopped making manual wind chronographs. Since gold watches tend to be expensive when new, the price of this classic 18K gold chronograph in 1969/70 was about the same as the new steel automatic el…

42.3mm. case and “breads of rise” bezel. In 1959, the astronaut Scott Carpenter suggested to Breitling that they develop a Navitimer that incorporated a 24-hour dial instead of the normal 12-hour dial. The reason is that there’s no day and night like we have on Earth, so its really complicated for the human body to adapt itself to this new situation. The 24-hour dial could help the astronaut to have a time measure. In 1962, Carpenter orbited the Earth three times wearing his Breitling…
