Young KIKUYU on cicumcision Day, Kenya. During initiations junior warriors of the KIKUYU painted their faces and bodies and wore shields like this called "ndome" on their upper arms. All wood shields were decorated with nonfigurative motifs on the outer surface and usually on the inside as well. The boys wear the "ndome" shields during these dances to symbolise the adult warrior status they are about to acquire.
