If I was going to choose just one rose for the garden this would be it - Rosa x odorata 'Mutabilis', a rosa chinensis which starts flowering quite early in the year and is one of the last to finish. It bears shocking pink and peachy-apricot flowers on deep maroon stems. The leaves are glaucous. It will make 1.5m x 1.5m or more. Natal plums or Carissa macrocarpa. The crimson fruits, peeping from the hedge plants attracted my attention. I picked a few just for fun. Little did i know, these brilliant colored fruits are edible. Unlike other fruits of Apocyanaceae family, this one is safe to eat, of course when fully ripe. I learnt that the latex, secreting from the pulp are undesirable, so I often washed it, before enjoying them.
