Fluency Strips

I want to share one of my favorite activities for teaching reading fluently and with expression. It's super-easy to put together and can be done within a small amount of time. It's a little something I call Fluency Strips (yeah, I'm totally not good at naming activities!). I cut up a group of sentences and place them in a bag. In a whole-group setting, I explain to students what it means to read fluently and with expression. Then, I have students come up one at a time to draw a strip out of…

Speak in complete sentences when appropriate. Complete sentences - good visual to have in room. A lot of my high schoolers come to me at elementary reading and writing levels, so this will be helpful! Topic this week: 3 of My Favorite Areas in My Classroom! (pics taken at the first of the year, just so you know) 1- My CAFE Board for Daily 3! I love it. My students refer to them ALL THE TIME just for reassurance that we have learned about things. 2- My Voices Board for writing. 3- My Anchor Chart board is by far my top pick. This is used multiple times a day. I don't have a full picture of it, but I will take one first thing in the morning! Here are some close-ups. I can fit 5 large charts…

Small Group Time

I recently started my small groups. Eight of my fourteen years of teaching were spent in second grade. My small groups were all leveled by guiding reading levels. I have tried out a few different ways in third and fourth. I think I'm happy with what I'm doing this year. We spend the bulk of our whole class reading instruction on comprehension. I feel like that is going well. In my beginning of the year assessments, I noticed some red flags with fluency and phonics. This year I'm going to…

I guess all that moving around made me forget a few things! :) We've been studying main idea for the past several weeks and I thought it would be the perfect time to transition to writing paragraphs. I remembered the…
