It looks like the burnt soldiers were mounted infantry on the tank which looks to be a Panzer V "Panther" according to the inclined walls of the turret. Mounted infantry because the body in the foreground has an MG42 between his legs which was a too bulky weapon for tank crews. BTW, I read the pgoto was taken in the Falaise-Pocket/Normandy in August 1944.

Rumor has it this German Luger may have once belonged to Pancho Villa in the 1920's. Whether or not that is true, it is an outstanding example of German engraving. Artist unknown.
