Bogs not only make an important contribution to preserving biodiversity but are also the most effective carbon stores of all rural ecosystems ✌️🌎🌱 However, the bogs have been systematically drained and degraded over centuries - also for the use of peat. By using homemade compost, you can avoid using peat and therefore protect bogs. We are working with the Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried Nature Conservation Foundation, which is renaturalizing a bog near Stuttgart.
Sad but true: Food waste from Europe alone could feed 200 million hungry people. 🍗🍎🌽🍇🥐🫐🫒🥝🥭🥦 Being aware of these amounts again and again and understanding what our consumption can do is worth a lot. Together, we can create a greener future. Always with the knowledge that a lot also has to happen politically and economically - but we can also work together for that.
Did you know that by the end of the year, about 10% of garbage is produced just at Christmas? Not cool. In the team, we have collected our favourite sustainable Christmas tips for you and would like to share them with you today. Just swipe through 👉 What are your favourite sustainable christmas tips?
Water is life 💦 But we need it to produce our food 🍅🌽🍆🥖🥐🍤🍟 CO2 emissions are an important indicator - but we also need to consider the water footprint of food 🦶 Good to know: KALEA recycles the water contained in food. Either for the composting process, or, if there is any left over, for you to water your plants. In this way, all resources are preserved. Source: Statista
Food is power ✊🍅🌽🥕 You read that right. With your eating habits, you have the power to do something good for the climate. What quickly becomes clear in this picture? A vegan way of eating has a smaller ecological footprint. You don't eat vegan or vegetarian? No problem. Going without more often and looking for alternatives are great first steps.
25% of the world’s fresh water supply is used to grow food that is never eaten 💦😳 Here, the responsibility lies primarily with the food industry. But you can also do a lot at home - if something goes rotten, you can still compost it in KALEA. Because the natural decomposition process has already begun. 🌶🍆🍤🥖🥑🍓🥬🥭🍰🍟 With KALEA, you return the nutrients and some of the water back into the cycle. Mother Earth says thank you 🌍
Did you know that most chewing gums contain plastic 🤨? Since the base of many chewing gums consists of petroleum-based polymers, chewing gums are not biodegradable 😕 Just spitting them out somewhere outside is really not a good idea. 👉 There are plastic-free and biodegradable chewing gums available, for example from True Gum 😍
This is a disaster! Not only because many of the foods were still edible. A large percentage of this food waste is disposed of incorrectly 😣 It ends up in conventional landfills and continues to rot there. In the process, food waste releases methane gas - a gas that is much worse for the climate than CO2. Be part of the revolution. Make Compost, Not Waste ☮️💜
Sometimes we forget the real value of things. Every single piece of food is produced. Bread does not grow on trees. It needs soil, grain, water, compost, sun and time. People who process the grain, who bake it into bread and sell it to us. With every food, remember how many essential resources are in it. And if there are parts not to eat, turn them back into fresh compost. In this way, important resources such as nutrients, minerals, but also working time, are not lost and remain in the cycle.
Everyone is talking about CO2. But methane is also a really bad gas in terms of the climate crisis because it has a much stronger effect than CO2. Incorrectly disposed organic waste causes methane gas and releases it into the atmosphere at landfills. KALEA is fighting this problem. When you make your own compost at home, you don't create methane gas. Annual emissions of methane can be reduced by up to 45 percent by 2030, according to the UN Environment Programme Unep. Help us do it!
1,555 million tons of food is wasted every year. The saddest part 😢? This food contains nutrients – essential nutrients that go from the earth, through plants, into our food. If this food is disposed of or burned, the nutrients are lost forever 🔥🌍 This is one of the reasons we founded KALEA: To be able to return these wonderful resources to the soil again and again. So with every compost cycle, you can make a positive change! Make Compost, Not Waste ☮️
One question that often reaches us: Can you compost cups or other single-use items labeled as “compostable” 🥤? At the moment, we don’t recommend filling them into KALEA, as these special synthetic materials can’t be composted within 48 hours. 👉 Right now, we’re testing whether our robust shredding mechanism can handle single-use items like those cups.
Today is World Water Day 💙 Water is not called "Blue Gold" for nothing - it is one of the most important resources on earth 🌍 It was therefore particularly important to us to use this resource as carefully as possible. KALEA does not require any additional water, as organic waste by nature already consists largely of water. During composting, water may remain which we collect in a water tank. It is very rich in nutrients - you can use it to water your plants. 🌺🌿 Because every drop counts!
Today is UN World Wildlife Day. According to the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, about 150 species disappear from the planet forever every day. One reason for species extinction is the destruction of important habitats 💥 At KALEA, we are doing our best to protect important habitats. Therefore, we have decided to buy and protect a large piece of bogland 💚🌱🌿 This wouldn't have been possible without the support of our great community!
In Germany, we say ""Die inneren Werte zählen"" 💚 Which means ""the inner values count"". In the case of fruits and vegetables, we should actually assume this - because what makes these foods important to us are their nutrients and minerals – and not their look. But in Germany alone, 3.6 million tons of food are thrown away every year because they are not up to standard. The cucumber too short, the apple too knobbly, the banana too straight 🥒🍎🍌
Combat the climate crisis with your way of eating 😍? Yes, that's possible. 👉 There are different types of foods that contribute more or less to climate change: 👍 Apples, pulses and mussels – they produce less emissions and help mother earth to stay healthy 👎 Beaf, butter and avocado – all of these foods require huge amounts of water, land and resources for their production So choose wisely which foods you want to enjoy 💚 Source: The Lancet (2019)
What a waste 🤦♂️ We invented KALEA because we want to empower you in not wasting your waste! Because it's not only a valuable resource - it also causes high damages to our climate 🌍😱 Incorrectly disposed organic waste rots in landfills and releases methane gas - a gas that is up to 30 times more harmful than CO2. Here you can see a map that shows you what percentage of organic waste ends up in landfills and is not disposed of properly. 👉 How does your country treat the waste issue?
In total, around 30% of the food produced worldwide is lost or wasted - every year! With KALEA, we want to contribute to more conscious handling of food, as well as food waste. Don't waste your waste, make compost out of it and give something back to nature ♻🌱⠀ ⠀ Source: unenvironment.org⠀
