Proxemics is defined as "the study of the use of space by human beings in a particular culture." Edward T. Hall displayed this diagram in his book, The Hidden Dimension, which discusses the four distance zones: intimate, personal, social, and public. The intimate zone is between 0'-1.5', the personal is 1.5'-4', the social is 4'-12', and the public is over 12'. When arranging furniture/accessories in a room, it is important to establish these distance zones to create a comfortable environment.
