Pete Townshend is so indelibly linked to Gibsons from The Who's golden age of Tommy through Who's Next that it's easy to overlook his lifelong preference for Fender Stratocasters. Unlike his contemporaries like Clapton, Beck, and Page, Townshend didn't like the fuzzy, compressed, sustaining tone best suited for soloing - he wanted the electric guitar to closely resemble the acoustic guitar's wider dynamic range to keep up with Moon and Entwistle's extreme dynamic shifts - which of course became
