Over a year McLean made these six sculptures from natural materials. He returned them to the environment, so these photographs are the only record of their existence. The sculptures demonstrate McLean’s interest in time and its passing.

Tadao Ando: Makomanai Takino Cemetery, Sapporo 2015. Before the temple was completed, the 44-foot-tall Buddha sculpture stood alone in a field for 15 years. The resulting temple envelops the statue, leaving only the top of its head visible from outside the hill, planted with 150,000 lavenders.

Robert Morris: Observatory, 1970-1977. Earth, water, grass, shells, steel, Bavarian granite, wood. East Flevoland/The Netherlands near Lelystad, at the crossing of Houtribweg and Swifterringweg. On both the longest and the shortest day of the year, the rising sun is captured in gigantic steel sights. On other days, too, an interesting play of sun and light is to be seen.
