SHOW ME THE OBI ! -- Maiko Forced to Back-Pack Wallpaper Samples Around Kyoto

These two Geisha-in-training must have really screwed up. The house "Mama" is making them carry around a couple of wallpaper sample books on their backs for a day as punishment. However, it turns out that the sample books belong to a Mr. Maguro, one of Mama's old "patrons" from her younger days. Mama is getting a kick-back of 20% on every new wallpaper job he gets from the advertising off the backs of these poor Maiko. Bad news : Another of Mama's old patrons, a Mr. Fujiyama, sells textiles…

"KOI NOBORI" IN OLD YOKOHAMA, JAPAN -- Wind-Sock Carp Feeding on the Breeze During a BOY'S DAY Festival in May

It was called "Boys Day" back then, but is now called "Children's Day".......except by some vocal Japanese women who know that it's REALLY still "Boy's Day"....!!! For an interim caption (Okinawa Soba style), and a related picture, see : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2456262140/ The above photo is another ca.1890s large-format, hand-tinted Salt Print.

"The confections made from a paste are blown like glass into various shapes, and allowed to harden", quoted from the 1897 caption. This studio shot is interesting: the poses are not standard, and the context they provide with their well-worn, everyday garments next to the beat-up portable "Candy Store" makes this image valuable for capturing a seldom seen moment of a Child's life in old Japan.

THE ITNERANT CANDY SELLER AND HIS LITTLE CUSTOMER in OLD JAPAN

"The confections made from a paste are blown like glass into various shapes, and allowed to harden" --- quoted from the 1897 caption. This studio shot is interesting for a number of reasons. For one thing, the poses are not standard --- from the uplifted chin of the little girl, to the truly puffed up cheeks of the confectioner in the act of blowing a bubble of sugary delight --- and the context they provide with their well-worn, everyday garments next to the beat-up portable "Candy Store"…

KIMONO SILK STORE in OLD JAPAN. Ca.1895-1905 hand-tinted glass lantern-slide photo. Made by T. TAKAGI of Kobe, but probably photographed by KOZABURO TAMAMURA of Yokohama who sold all of his stock to Takagi.

KIMONO SILK STORE in OLD JAPAN

This photo looks complicated with so many conflicting patterns, and so much going on. But, it's all very simple : It's THREE very frustrated guys + TWO finicky Geisha girls who can't make up their minds. The boss in his little cage is getting a headache. Maguro, the assistant with the abacus, has sore fingers after two hours of crunching numbers that the Geisha keep saying are unacceptable. The little guy on the left has rolled and un-rolled about 18 bolts of fabric you see all over the…

......and KNEELING

This is quite a beautiful image of a Geisha (or older Maiko) posing for a "domestic scene". It hand-tinted albumen print was taken in the 1880s by a relatively obscure but active photographer named YAMAMOTO. The JAPAN CAMERA INDUSTRY INSTITUTE ( formerly called the JAPAN CAMERA INSPECTION INSTITUTE) --- or JCII --- has a beautiful Yamamoto album with his photographic seal inside the cover. The JCII album is extremely unique in that all of the many Geisha images have the names of the Geisha…

A great ca.1880s studio shot of a Basket Seller by KIMBEI KUSAKABE. Kimbei took some really great basket-maker and basket-seller studio shots. Today, Kimbei's photos have generally shown the most resiliance against fading. His careful processing and rich tones are among the best --- if not the best --- of all of the 19th century Japanese photographers. Although the above shot is a simple as you can get, Kimbei also produced some of the most lavishly staged and colored images as well. He is…

The wet kimono was "stuck" to the board, and the water smoothed down by hand from top to bottom. The shape was carefully preserved, preventing any odd "stretching" in any one direction, and it was dried in place -- or at least until dry enough to be removed and carefully hung in another place that would hasten drying on both sides, and prevent stretching.

KIMONO DAYS -- Japanese Women and Their Everyday Tools

The "Ironing Board" without the Iron. Actually, it's better described as a "drying board", I suppose. Notice the washtub as well. A lot of…

Chōzuya - a Shinto water ablution pavilion for a ceremonial purification rite known as temizu - Kyoto, Japan

Chōzuya

A chōzuya or temizuya (手水舎?) is a Shinto water ablution pavilion for a ceremonial purification rite known as temizu. Water-filled basins, called chōzubachi, are used by worshipers for washing their left hands, right hands, mouth and finally the handle of the water ladle to purify themselves before approaching the main Shinto shrine or shaden (Japanese: 社殿). This symbolic purification is normal before worship and all manned shrines have this facility, as well as many Buddhist temples and some…
